Written with outdoorsmen and fathers looking for guidance in mind, this collection of short stories from author Walt Merrell takes readers on a journey of finding common ground, learning about the nature of life, and strengthening the bonds of family through a shared love of the great outdoors.

God blessed me with three beautiful girls who, most of the time, I do not understand. As the youngest of three brothers and the son of a very independent woman, I hardly had to fight enough lions or bears to prepare me for the battle of fatherhood with daughters. While they wanted to listen to Taylor Swift and play with baby dolls, I wanted to listen to Johnny Cash and play with G.I. Joe. I felt like I was losing the battle. Looking for guidance, I turned to the only person I knew to be a reliable source: my wife. “Find common ground,” she suggested. And we did just that.
God painted a living canvas for us to enjoy. From the Everglades to the woods behind our house, we found a new landscape of our relationship during these experiences. I realized the value of shepherding my children in the great outdoors. And so, I began to write these stories…all almost entirely true. I write factual fiction and fictional facts about our experiences…both the grandiose adventures and the seemingly insignificant excursions. The stories about my girls, originally intended to be a roadmap for men to avoid my own mistakes, grew into stories about my wife, Hannah, and the rest of our family. But most of all, these stories grew into chronicles of God at work.
Come along with us on our journey. Not because we are a family worthy of your interests, but because what God does in our lives, He will do in yours too. What God has done within me, He will do within you too. Let’s go…shepherding outdoors.
